Economic Psychology has only recently begun to grow in Brazil. However, it has already been established in Europe, North America, New Zealand and Australia for some decades now. It studies the economic behaviour of individuals, and therefore belongs to the interface between Psychology and Economics. It has roots in both Social Psychology and Political Economy, and nowadays we can also find parallel research in other areas such as Behavioural Economics, Socio-Economics and Behavioural Finance. The expression "Economic Psychology" was first used back in 1881, but it was only in the 1970's that the area gained greater visibility and autonomy. The International Association for the Research in Economic Psychology - IAREP was created in 1982 and it gathers psychologists, experimental economists, administrators, specialists in marketing and information technology, among other researchers, who get together in annual conferences that take place in different cities in Europe and other parts of the world. There is a very favourable and friendly atmosphere for exchange and mutual cooperation in these meetings, besides the genuine interest in building a common ground for all the different collaborators that make it up. We also have the Journal of Economic Psychology, and summer schools and workshops that occur regularly in several countries. It ought to be pointed out too that two researchers within the discipline have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics - Herbert Simon, in 1978, and Daniel Kahneman, in 2002, along with Vernon Smith, an experimental economist.

My involvement with Economic Psychology dates back to 1994, when I presented a project for a master's degree in Social Psychology at Universidade de São Paulo - USP, to investigate emotional aspects connected to the experience of high economic inflation and later on, a relative stabilization of our currency, such as we were having back then in Brazil. At that time, I did not know Economic Psychology existed, and used my psychoanalytical background and training to discuss this issue. Along the years in grad school I had an initial contact with a book, and a colleague from New Zealand, and thus began to discover the area. In 2000 I became a member of IAREP, and over the past few years have been attending the annual conferences. These regular meetings with colleagues from different parts from the world have provided me with a valuable source of information and stimulus to continue studying issues within the discipline. In 2000 also, I created a homepage to offer information about Economic Psychology, along with my other areas of interest. At the present moment I am preparing my doctoral thesis about the History of Economic Psychology at the section of History of Psychology in the Social Psychology Post-Graduate Programme of the Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo.

A Psicologia Econômica é uma área que vem começando a se desenvolver no Brasil mais recentemente. No entanto, ela já está estabelecida na Europa, América do Norte, Nova Zelândia e Austrália há várias décadas. Seu objeto de estudo é o comportamento econômico dos indivíduos, e portanto, situa-se numa interface que reúne aspectos psicológicos e econômicos. Sua origem remete à Psicologia Social e à Economia Política, e atualmente existem também áreas que atuam em paralelo na mesma intersecção, enfatizando mais diferentes ângulos, como a Economia Comportamental, a Sócio-Economia e as Finanças Comportamentais. O termo ‘Psicologia Econômica´ foi usado pela primeira vez em 1881, mas a disciplina ganhou espaço e autonomia a partir da década de 1970. Em 1982 foi fundada a International Association for the Research in Economic Psychology - IAREP, uma associação internacional de pesquisa em Psicologia Econômica, que reúne psicólogos, economistas experimentais, administradores, profissionais de marketing e tecnologia da informação, entre outros. Estes pesquisadores se reúnem em congressos anuais, em diferentes cidades da Europa, ou do mundo. Existe um clima fértil de respeito, troca e colaboração mútua nesses encontros, e um interesse em constituir um campo de estudo comum às diferentes vertentes que o compõem. Além disso, há um periódico, Journal of Economic Psychology, e periodicamente, escolas de verão e seminários específicos em alguns países. Devemos lembrar ainda que dois pesquisadores do assunto já receberam o Premio Nobel de Economia, Herbert Simon, em 1978, e Daniel Kahneman, em 2002, sendo este em conjunto com Vernon Smith, um economista experimental.

Meu interesse pela Psicologia Econômica teve início antes mesmo de ter conhecimento que esta disciplina existia - em 1994 apresentei um projeto de Mestrado em Psicologia Social e do Trabalho no Instituto de Psicologia da USP, com o objetivo de estudar a relação que poderia haver entre aspectos emocionais e a experiência da inflação econômica alta que vínhamos tendo no país, e a partir daquele ano, a maior estabilização da moeda - em outras palavras, entre nosso funcionamento psíquico, e o que estava ocorrendo na economia, a partir, principalmente, de uma visão psicanalítica, uma vez que é essa minha formação original. Durante a elaboração da dissertação travei conhecimento com um primeiro livro dessa disciplina, e com um colega que me forneceu as primeiras informações, a partir da Nova Zelândia. Concluído o mestrado, segui buscando mais informações sobre o tema, e encontrei a IAREP, da qual me tornei membro em 2000. Passei a freqüentar os congressos anuais, o que tem me permitido um intercâmbio muito importante com colegas de diferentes partes do mundo. Em 2000 também, criei uma homepage para difundir o assunto, juntamente com os outros que venho investigando. No momento estou no Núcleo de História da Psicologia do Programa de Psicologia Social da PUC-SP, preparando minha tese de doutorado a respeito da história da Psicologia Econômica.
